Different Landscapes,

Different Medicines.

Different Landscapes, Different Medicines™ is a core teaching of the Reciprocity Rx™ framework. Drawing from ecology, nature and health research, stewardship, and lived experience, it explores how mountains, forests, water, open spaces, deserts, and dark skies each support different aspects of human well-being, resilience, belonging, perspective, creativity, rest, and connection.

Not all nature experiences feel the same because not all landscapes support us in the same ways.

A quiet forest feels different than a desert sunrise. A mountain summit offers something different than an evening beneath the stars. Water can soothe what feels stuck. Open spaces can create room to breathe. Each landscape invites a different relationship with ourselves, with the living world, and with the challenges we’re carrying.

At Reciprocity Rx™, we call this idea Different Landscapes, Different Medicines.

While all time in nature can support human health and well-being, emerging research suggests that different environments may influence us through different combinations of sensory experiences, ecological relationships, opportunities for movement, nervous system regulation, awe, restoration, connection, and meaning-making.

This framework brings together research, lived experience, stewardship, and reflection practices to help people understand not only that nature helps, but how different places may support different needs.

Whether you’re looking for stress relief, burnout recovery, emotional processing, creativity, rest, resilience, perspective, belonging, or a deeper sense of connection, there may be a landscape that feels especially supportive in this season of life.

What Landscape Medicine Do You Need Right Now?

There is no hierarchy here. No “best” landscape. No right answer. The most supportive landscape is often the one that meets you where you are. Some seasons call for perspective. Some call for belonging. Some call for rest. Some call for clarity. The invitation is simple: pay attention to what you’re needing, then notice which landscapes seem to help you find it. Because different landscapes offer different medicines, and the relationship is always evolving.

GO DEEPER

Mountains, deserts, water, open spaces, forests, and dark skies each offer their own kind of medicine — different ways of seeing, feeling, and moving through the world.

If you have already moved through our free toolkit and are ready to dig deeper, this is the full Different Landscapes, Different Medicines curriculum. Streamlined, cohesive, and built for repeat use across seasons.

Inside, you’ll explore:

  • Mountains: perspective, patience, long-view, awe

  • Deserts: clarity, simplicity, transformation, resilience

  • Water: flow, emotion, adaptability

  • Open Spaces: visibility, relationship, shared awareness

  • Forests: interdependence, cycles, collaboration

  • Dark Skies: rest, wonder, and orientation

Each landscape includes its own teachings, reflection prompts, practical field-based exercises, and integration rituals designed to be used outside — in your neighborhood, on a trail, beside water, under trees, or beneath the stars.
